Why Does Body Acne Leave Dark Marks
Body acne shows up on places like the back, chest, and shoulders. It often comes from clogged pores, bacteria, or yeast overgrowth. When these pimples heal, they can leave behind flat dark spots. These spots are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. They happen because your skin makes too much melanin, the pigment that gives color to your skin.
The process starts with inflammation. Acne on the body, like cystic bumps or red pustules, irritates the skin deeply. Your body sees this as an injury. It sends signals to special cells called melanocytes. These cells kick into high gear and pump out extra melanin to protect the area. This is an old survival trick from our ancestors to shield skin from sun damage. But today, it just leaves brown or black marks where the pimples were.
Body acne tends to be worse because those areas rub against clothes, sweat more, or get less care than your face. Types like acne vulgaris from bacteria or pityrosporum folliculitis from yeast cause bright red, itchy bumps. These heal slower and leave stubborn discoloration. The deeper the acne, like cysts, the more melanin your skin produces. Darker skin tones see this more often, with up to 65 percent of people affected compared to lighter skin.
Sun makes it worse. UV rays hit exposed body areas and tell melanocytes to make even more pigment. This turns temporary marks into long-lasting ones. Picking or squeezing body pimples adds extra trauma, ramping up the dark spots.
These marks are not true scars. Scars change the skin’s texture, like pits or ridges. PIH is just color on flat skin. Red or pink marks, called post-inflammatory erythema, can mix in from broken blood vessels. But the dark ones come straight from that melanin overload.
