Why the 2026 Probiotic and Secretome Paper Reports No Trial Results Yet: How Adults With Persistent Acne Can Compare Probiotic Claims

The 2026 paper reports no results yet because it is a trial protocol that describes planned treatment, not completed treatment. Adults with persistent acne can compare probiotic claims by matching exact strain, dose, trial length and measured skin change.

A secretome is the mix of signals that stem cells release, here tested as a skin topical. The plan tests standard care plus oral probiotics and/or topical mesenchymal-stem-cell secretome against matching placebos for mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris. According to the BMJ Open protocol, the plan covers eight weeks of follow-up with pretest and posttest checks of acne severity and fecal microbiome restoration.

Who is this research for?

The protocol focuses on persistent mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris in teens and adults. These are patients who may want to avoid long-term drugs that disturb gut microbes.

That group includes many adult women who need steady care over months or years. They often need care that can continue without extended antibiotics.

Why test add-ons instead of antibiotics alone?

Acne guidance keeps oral antibiotic courses short and paired with other topicals. The Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin in the January 2024 review sets about three months as the usual limit, up to six months under NICE.

Oral antibiotics are always co-prescribed with non-antibiotic topicals. That limit is why researchers test probiotics and secretome as add-ons, not replacements.

How do you compare two probiotic products?

ISAPP notes in the ISAPP label guide that probiotic effects are strain-specific. A prior acne win with one Lactobacillus does not predict a Bifidobacterium result.

Compare labels point by point and keep the photo: The January 2025 scoping review found wide variation in strains, four-to-twelve-week courses and small samples. Direct swaps between products therefore mislead.

  • exact genus, species and strain designation
  • viable dose in colony-forming units through end of shelf life
  • treatment duration and comparator used
  • measured endpoints such as lesion counts or Investigator Global Assessment

What should you check in an ad?

The FTC requires competent and reliable scientific evidence for U.S. health ads. That generally means randomized controlled human trials, as explained in the FTC compliance guidance.

Dietary-supplement structure/function claims must carry FDA disclaimer language. They may not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent acne. Save the exact label and ad screenshot before you buy. Ask your clinician whether the cited trial tested that same strain, dose and endpoint for your acne type.
