What to Expect After PRP Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, treatment uses your own blood to help heal injuries like tendon problems, joint pain, or ligament tears. Doctors draw a small amount of blood, spin it in a machine to concentrate the platelets full of healing growth factors, and inject it into the sore spot. Right after the shot, you might feel warmth, mild pain, soreness, or swelling at the site. This is normal as your body starts the repair process. Many people notice a bit of heaviness or discomfort that lasts a day or two.

Plan to rest the area for at least 24 to 48 hours. Skip strenuous exercise or anything that strains the treated spot. Ice it if it swells, and keep it clean to avoid infection. Do not touch or rub the area unless your doctor says so. Over the next few days, the initial inflammation eases up. By days four to seven, things often feel better as growth factors kick in to build collagen and start tissue repair.

In weeks two to four, you may see real progress. Stiffness goes down, movement gets easier, and pain lessens. This is when the body strengthens the area with new collagen for better flexibility. Your doctor might suggest light exercises or physical therapy to help. Most folks can ease back into normal activities around three to four weeks, but go slow.

From weeks five to eight, healing keeps improving. Tissue gets tougher and more like normal. Many notice big changes by six to eight weeks, though it can take months for full results. PRP works gradually by boosting your natural healing, not giving instant fixes. Some need one treatment, others a few.

Everyone heals at their own pace based on age, health, and the injury. Stay hydrated, eat well, and follow your doctor’s plan. If pain worsens or you see signs of infection like red streaks or fever, call your provider right away.
