What Causes Acne During Menopause

Acne during menopause surprises many women who thought breakouts were a thing of teenage years past. It happens because of big shifts in body hormones that throw off skin balance.

The main trigger starts with dropping levels of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones normally keep things steady, but as they decline in menopause, androgens like testosterone take over. Women make more of these male hormones from adrenal glands after menopause, leading to extra oil from skin glands. That oil clogs pores and sparks pimples. Chin and jawline spots are classic signs of this androgen boost.

Perimenopause, the lead-up to full menopause, brings hormone swings that make acne come and go. Stress piles on by raising cortisol, which messes with oil production and worsens breakouts. Lack of sleep does the same by stressing the body more.

Gut health plays a role too. Lower estrogen and progesterone slow down bowels, upsetting gut bacteria. This leads to bloating, gas, or irregular stools alongside skin issues. Poor diet adds fuel, with high sugar foods, dairy, and refined carbs spiking insulin and inflammation that feeds acne.

Skincare slip-ups contribute. Heavy creams, comedogenic makeup, or harsh washes irritate skin and trap bacteria. Even thyroid problems or insulin resistance can spark painful cystic acne on the forehead or elsewhere.

Lifestyle matters. High stress, bad sleep, and little exercise crank up hormones that clog pores. Sun damage from years past weakens skin barriers, making it prone to rashes and spots during this time.
