Why Does Acne Appear During Menopause
Menopause brings big changes to a woman’s body, and one surprise for many is acne popping up on the face. Even though you might think acne is just for teenagers, it can show up later in life because of shifting hormones.[1][2][3]
During menopause, estrogen levels drop while other hormones like testosterone stay steady or even rise a bit. Testosterone is a male hormone that both men and women have, but when it gets out of balance in women after menopause, it tells the skin to make more oil. This extra oil mixes with dead skin cells and clogs pores, leading to pimples.[1][2][3][4]
In the years leading up to menopause, called perimenopause, hormones fluctuate wildly. This can cause acne that comes and goes, often on the chin or forehead. Chin acne might link to higher testosterone from the adrenal glands, while forehead spots could tie to stress or estrogen changes.[1][5]
Not all acne looks the same. Some women get painful cystic bumps deep under the skin, which might come from issues like insulin resistance or thyroid problems. Others notice breakouts tied to stress and poor sleep, as these raise cortisol, another hormone that boosts oil production.[1][4]
A weaker gut can play a role too. When estrogen and progesterone drop, it changes how your intestines work, messing with good bacteria. This leads to bloating or irregular bowels, and poor gut health can trigger skin breakouts.[1]
Stress from daily life makes things worse by spiking cortisol, and things like high-sugar foods or dairy might add inflammation. While menopause itself is the main driver, these factors team up to make skin oilier and more prone to pimples.[2][4][6]
Lower estrogen also weakens the skin’s protective barrier, making it drier overall but still oily in spots, which clogs pores more easily. Women in their 40s and 50s often see this around the jawline, a sign of hormonal shifts.[3][5][8]
