Brown Acne Marks vs True Acne Scars

Many people get confused about what happens after acne clears up. Some spots look dark or brown, while others feel bumpy or pitted. These are not the same thing. Brown acne marks are flat discolorations on smooth skin. True acne scars change the skin’s texture and shape.

Brown acne marks come from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. This happens when inflammation from a pimple triggers extra melanin, the pigment that colors your skin. The result is a flat brown or dark patch that stays after the acne heals. Your skin feels smooth if you run your finger over it. These marks are common in all skin types but show up more on darker skin because of higher melanin levels. They often fade on their own over months or years, though treatments like topical creams can speed it up.[1][2]

True acne scars form from deeper damage. Severe acne like cysts or nodules harms the dermis, the skin’s deeper layer. This disrupts collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm. Scars come in types like atrophic, which are indented. Ice pick scars are narrow deep pits, like tiny holes. Boxcar scars are round or oval with sharp edges. Rolling scars have wavy dips. Raised scars, like hypertrophic or keloid, build up extra collagen. Unlike brown marks, scars feel uneven: sunken, raised, or rough when touched.[1][2]

To tell them apart, check texture first. Flat and smooth with color change means brown marks or PIH. Bumpy, pitted, or raised areas point to scars. Color helps too. Brown or dark flat spots are PIH. Red or pink flat spots are another mark called PIE, from blood vessels. Scars focus on shape, not just color.[1]

Preventing scars starts with treating acne early to limit deep inflammation. For brown marks, sun protection and gentle skincare help fading. Scars often need doctor visits for lasers or peels.[1][2]
