Why Acne Gets Worse With Stress

Have you ever noticed your skin breaking out more during tough times at work or school? Stress makes acne worse because it triggers your body to produce extra oil on the skin, which clogs pores and leads to pimples.[1][2][3]

When you feel stressed, your brain signals the release of a hormone called cortisol. This hormone tells the sebaceous glands in your skin, which make oil, to work harder. More oil means skin gets greasy faster, trapping dirt and dead skin cells inside pores. This creates the perfect spot for bacteria to grow, sparking inflammation and those red, painful bumps we call acne.[1][2][3]

Your skin acts like a stress responder on its own. Stress turns on special receptors in skin cells, making them multiply and produce even more oil. It also messes with how skin sheds dead cells, leading to tiny blockages called microcomedones, the starting point of acne. On top of that, stress weakens your skin’s protective barrier, letting acne-causing bacteria like C. acnes settle in more easily.[1]

High cortisol from ongoing stress, like anxiety or big life changes, keeps this cycle going. It ramps up oil production especially around the jaw and cheeks, and can even cause swelling or thinner skin over time. This creates a loop: stress worsens acne, acne stresses you out more, and cortisol stays high.[2]

Other factors tied to stress, like hormonal shifts or poor sleep, pile on too. For example, stress spikes can mimic monthly hormone changes that boost oil and breakouts.[1][3]
