What Causes Acne Around the Hairline

Acne around the hairline shows up as pimples, bumps, or red spots right where your hair meets your forehead or neck. It happens when pores get clogged with oil, dead skin, dirt, or bacteria in that area.

One big reason is the natural buildup of oils from your scalp and skin. Your hair and skin produce sebum, an oily substance, and when it mixes with sweat or dead cells, it blocks hair follicles near the hairline. This leads to breakouts, especially if you do not wash your face and hair often enough.[2][3]

Hair products play a major role too. Gels, sprays, conditioners, or oils can drip onto your skin and clog pores. These items often have comedogenic ingredients, meaning they trap oil and dirt against your forehead. Makeup can do the same if it spreads to the hairline. Hats, helmets, headbands, or bandanas make it worse by trapping sweat and dead skin cells, creating a perfect spot for pimples.[2][3]

Hormones often trigger hairline acne, mainly in adults. Androgens, which are male hormones present in everyone, boost oil production and clog pores. This is common in women with hormonal shifts from birth control, pregnancy, menopause, or conditions like PCOS. Stress adds to it by releasing more hormones that ramp up oil.[1][3]

Diet can contribute. Foods high in sugar or dairy, like sodas, sweets, pastries, or whey protein, spike insulin and increase oil. Overwashing your face strips natural oils, making your skin produce even more sebum to compensate, which clogs pores further.[1][3]

Sometimes it is not true acne. Seborrheic dermatitis, a skin condition from yeast like Malassezia on oily areas, causes flaky, red bumps mistaken for pimples along the hairline and forehead. Folliculitis, or infected hair follicles from friction or irritation, looks similar with red or white spots.[3][4]
