What Causes Post Acne Redness to Linger
After a pimple heals, you might notice pink or red spots that stick around for weeks or months. This is called post inflammatory erythema, or PIE. It happens when acne inflammation damages tiny blood vessels under the skin. These vessels dilate or break, leaving behind that stubborn redness.[1][3][5]
The main trigger is the inflammation from acne itself. When your skin fights a breakout, especially cystic or severe ones, it swells and heats up. This stresses the capillaries, the small blood vessels close to the surface. They stay widened even after the pimple is gone, causing the red look.[1][3][5]
A damaged skin barrier makes things worse. If your skin’s protective layer gets weak from harsh products or over exfoliation, healing slows down. Inflammation lingers longer, keeping those red marks visible.[2]
Sun exposure plays a big role too. UV rays make blood vessels more reactive and slow the repair process. Without sunscreen, redness can darken or last even longer.[2][4]
Picking or squeezing pimples adds extra trauma. This breaks more vessels and restarts inflammation, so the redness hangs on.[4][6]
Other factors like hormones, dermatitis, or even cuts can contribute, but acne is the top cause. Genetics and skin type matter too. Fairer skin shows PIE more clearly because it lacks as much melanin to mask it.[1][5]
Treating active acne quickly helps prevent this. Leaving breakouts untreated lets inflammation drag on, raising the chance of lingering red spots.[1][6]
