What Causes Acne During Periods of Anxiety
Anxiety triggers acne breakouts mainly through stress hormones like cortisol, which ramp up oil production in your skin and clog pores. When you feel anxious, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode, releasing cortisol from the adrenal glands. This hormone tells your skin’s sebaceous glands to make more sebum, the oily substance that keeps skin moist. Too much sebum mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, blocking hair follicles and creating pimples, whiteheads, or cysts.[3][4][6]
This process forms a vicious cycle. Anxiety not only starts the breakout but also worsens it. Poor sleep from worry slows skin repair, while stress sparks inflammation that makes pimples redder and more painful. High cortisol also weakens your skin’s barrier, letting irritants in and leading to more irritation.[1][3][4]
Women often face this more intensely during anxiety spells. Studies show adult women report higher levels of emotional distress from acne, with anxiety amplifying breakouts on the jawline and cheeks. Chronic anxiety keeps cortisol levels elevated, turning occasional pimples into ongoing issues.[2][4]
Teenagers are hit hard too. Anxiety over school or social media can lead to hormonal shifts that boost oil and inflammation, creating a loop where pimples fuel more worry and vice versa.[1]
Other factors play in. Anxiety might cause habits like touching your face or picking at skin, spreading bacteria and scarring pores. It can also disrupt your immune response, making it harder to fight acne-causing bacteria.[3]
Managing anxiety helps break the pattern. Simple steps like deep breathing or better sleep can lower cortisol and ease breakouts over time.[3][4]
