Why Does Acne Leave Texture Changes
Acne often leaves behind uneven skin texture because the inflammation from pimples damages the deeper layers of your skin, disrupting the collagen and elastin that keep it smooth. When a pimple forms, especially deeper ones like cysts or nodules, it triggers a strong inflammatory response that breaks down these vital proteins in the dermis, the skin’s supportive layer.[4][9][10]
Your body rushes to heal the damage by producing new collagen, but it does not always do a perfect job. If too little collagen forms, the skin sinks inward, creating dips or depressions known as atrophic scars. These come in types like ice pick scars, which are narrow and deep, boxcar scars with sharp edges, and rolling scars that give a wavy look from fibrous bands pulling the skin down.[4]
On the flip side, if your body makes too much collagen during repair, raised scars can develop, sitting above the skin surface. The severity of the original acne plays a big role here: longer-lasting or more intense inflammation causes greater damage and worse texture changes.[4][9]
Factors like your genetics, skin type, and how quickly you treat the acne influence the outcome. Picking or squeezing pimples worsens the harm by spreading inflammation deeper. As you age, lost collagen makes any existing texture issues more noticeable, since the skin loses its natural firmness.[2][4]
Sun exposure can make things worse too, as UV rays break down collagen further and darken discoloration from healed acne, prolonging uneven texture.[2][4]
