Why Does Acne Flare During Emotional Stress
Emotional stress often leads to acne breakouts because it triggers your body to release a hormone called cortisol. This hormone ramps up oil production in your skin, clogging pores and sparking inflammation that causes pimples.
Cortisol comes from your adrenal glands when you feel stressed, like during work deadlines or tough personal times. It tells the sebaceous glands in your skin to make more sebum, which is the natural oil that keeps skin moist. But too much sebum thickens and gets sticky, mixing with dead skin cells to block hair follicles. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria like C. acnes, leading to red, swollen spots, often on the jawline or chin.
Stress also slows down your skin’s natural repair process. Normally, your skin sheds dead cells and renews itself quickly. Under stress, cortisol disrupts this, weakening the skin barrier. The barrier loses moisture faster, making skin dry on top but oily underneath. This imbalance irritates the skin more and invites inflammation.
These breakouts tend to feel deeper and more painful than regular pimples. They pop up suddenly because everyday stresses, like poor sleep or constant phone notifications, keep cortisol levels high. Over time, this can worsen existing acne or even speed up skin aging by breaking down collagen.
Stress creates a cycle too. Pimples make you stressed about your looks, which pumps out more cortisol and leads to even more breakouts. While severe cases might link to medical issues like Cushing’s syndrome, most flares come from common emotional pressure.
