Why Do Pimples Keep Coming Back in the Same Spot
Pimples often return to the same spot because of clogged pores that do not fully heal, overactive oil glands in that area, lingering bacteria, or repeated irritation from habits like touching your face or using certain products.[1][4]
Your skin has tiny pores connected to oil glands. When these glands make too much oil, dead skin cells mix in and block the pore. Bacteria grow inside, causing swelling and a pimple.[1] If the pore stays partly clogged after the first pimple fades, it sets the stage for another one right there.[4] Bacteria can hang around too, ready to cause trouble again.[4]
Certain spots on your face point to specific reasons. Pimples on the chin or jawline often link to hormones, especially in women over 25. These can flare with stress, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or conditions like PCOS that raise male hormones and boost oil.[1][2] The T-zone, like forehead and nose, might get hit from sweat or friction.[1]
Habits make it worse in the same place. Friction from masks, phones, or dirty pillowcases rubs the skin and traps oil.[1] Hair products or makeup can clog pores if they drip down.[1] Picking or popping spreads bacteria and delays healing, inviting more pimples.[1] Even toothpaste with fluoride or heavy skincare might irritate spots around the mouth.[1]
Diet plays a role for some. Foods high in sugar, like sodas and sweets, or dairy and whey protein spike oil production.[1][2] Stress and poor sleep raise hormones that do the same.[2]
Overwashing strips your skin’s protection, making glands work harder and worsening clogs.[2] Genetics also matter, as some people just have skin prone to this pattern.[3]
To break the cycle, clean gently twice a day, avoid touching the spot, and swap pillowcases often. Track what you eat or use to spot triggers. If pimples keep coming or hurt deep, see a dermatologist for hormone checks or treatments.[1][2][3]
