Why Breakouts Can Leave Permanent Texture
Breakouts happen when pores get clogged with oil, dead skin, and bacteria, leading to pimples, cysts, or nodules. While many heal without a trace, some leave behind uneven skin texture that lasts because of deep damage under the surface.
Skin normally heals by making new cells and collagen to fill in wounds. But bad breakouts disrupt this. Cystic acne, for example, starts with too much oil from hormones or stress. This oil mixes with dead skin cells and blocks pores. Bacteria like C. acnes grow inside, sparking strong inflammation that digs into deeper skin layers.
Unlike surface pimples, these deep ones form painful lumps called cysts. The swelling breaks down collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and firm. When healing starts, the body struggles to rebuild evenly. Holes or pits called ice pick scars appear where collagen is lost. Raised bumps known as hypertrophic scars form if too much collagen piles up.
Picking or popping makes it worse. Squeezing pushes infection deeper and irritates nearby skin. This causes uneven healing, leading to pitted marks, dark spots, or bumpy texture that does not fade. Cysts often hit the jawline or cheeks due to hormones like androgens, which boost oil in adults, especially women during cycles, pregnancy, or PCOS.
Factors like high-sugar foods, dairy, or poor sleep ramp up oil and swelling, raising scar risk. Darker skin tones face higher chances of thick keloid scars from overactive healing.
Early treatment cuts damage. Gentle care avoids picking, letting skin repair better over time.
