What Is Salicylic Acid and How Does It Work
Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in skin care products that helps treat acne, warts, and other skin issues. It comes from the bark of the white willow tree and acts as a type of chemical called a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA.
This acid has a special structure that makes it dissolve in oil. That means it can slip deep into your skin’s pores, where oil and dead skin cells often build up and cause problems like blackheads or pimples. Once inside, it works by breaking down the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. This process, known as being keratolytic, lets those cells slough off easily, clearing out clogs and smoothing the skin.
Salicylic acid also fights inflammation and can kill some bacteria on the skin. For acne, it reduces redness and swelling by stopping the body from making too many chemicals that cause pain and puffiness. You find it in cleansers, creams, shampoos for dandruff, and treatments for calluses, corns, psoriasis, and keratosis pilaris.
Unlike other exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids that only work on the skin’s surface, salicylic acid goes deeper. This makes it great for oily or acne-prone skin. Products often use it at low strengths, like 2 percent, to avoid irritation. Always start slow if you are new to it, and use sunscreen since it can make skin more sensitive to the sun.
It relates to aspirin too, since aspirin is made from a modified version of salicylic acid. But for skin, people use the pure form to exfoliate and heal.
