What Is PRP for Skin?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is a treatment that uses a small amount of your own blood to help improve your skin. Doctors draw blood from your arm, just like for a regular blood test. They put it in a machine called a centrifuge that spins fast to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood. Platelets are tiny cell pieces packed with growth factors, which are proteins that help your body heal and make new cells.

Once ready, the PRP gets injected into your skin or applied on top, often with microneedling. Microneedling uses a tool with tiny needles to make small punctures in the skin. This lets the PRP soak in deeper. The growth factors then kickstart your skin’s repair process. They tell cells called fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. Collagen keeps skin firm, and elastin makes it stretchy. Over time, this leads to smoother, tighter skin with better tone and glow.

People get PRP for skin to soften fine lines and wrinkles, even out texture, fade acne scars, shrink pores, and boost overall youthfulness. It works well on the face but can treat other areas too. Since it uses your own blood, there is low risk of allergic reactions or side effects. Right after treatment, you might have redness, swelling, or bruising that fades in a day or two. Full results show up in weeks as collagen builds, often lasting months with follow-up sessions.

The process takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Many clinics numb the skin first for comfort. You can usually go back to daily activities right away, avoiding sun and harsh products for a bit. A typical plan is three sessions a month apart, then maintenance every six to 12 months. It suits most people wanting natural rejuvenation without surgery.
