Small uniform breakouts on the skin often look like tiny red or flesh-colored bumps that all appear the same size and shape. These are usually not regular acne but conditions like fungal acne or keratosis pilaris.
Fungal acne, also called Malassezia folliculitis, happens when a yeast that lives naturally on the skin grows too much inside hair follicles.[1][5][7] This yeast thrives in warm, humid places and can overgrow due to things like heavy creams that block pores, antibiotics, steroids, a weak immune system, or nutritional gaps.[1][9] It often shows up in tight clusters on the chest, back, arms, or forehead, and the bumps itch.[1][5][6] Hormones, stress, high-sugar diets, or infections can make it worse by boosting oil or weakening defenses.[5]
Keratosis pilaris creates small, rough bumps from excess keratin, a protein that plugs hair follicles.[3][4] These feel like sandpaper, stay the same size, and lack pus or redness like acne has. Genetics are the main cause, but dry skin, eczema, cold weather, or hormone shifts during puberty or pregnancy play a role too.[3][4] They commonly appear on upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or cheeks and get worse in winter.[3][4]
Regular bacterial acne differs because its bumps vary in size, include whiteheads or cysts, and come from clogged pores with oil, dead skin, and bacteria.[1][2] Those rarely cluster uniformly or itch, and they hit the face’s T-zone more.[1][2]
