What Causes Inflammatory Skin Conditions to Worsen

Inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema often get worse due to everyday triggers that disrupt the skin’s balance or ramp up the immune response. These flare-ups can turn mild patches into itchy, red, or scaly outbreaks that last longer and hurt more.

Stress stands out as a common culprit. It does not start these conditions, but it sparks flare-ups by weakening skin defenses and boosting inflammation. For eczema, busy workdays or family worries can lead to intense itching and rashes that crack or weep. Psoriasis responds the same way, with stress speeding up skin cell growth into thick plaques.

Weather changes play a big role too. Cold air dries out the skin, making eczema drier and itchier while triggering psoriasis scales to thicken. Heat or humidity can sweat the skin and worsen both.

Infections and germs on the skin make things worse. In eczema, a weak skin barrier lets bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus take hold, leading to more swelling and pus-filled spots. The natural good bacteria that usually fight this off fail during flares. Psoriasis sees similar issues, where germs stir up immune cells and plaques.

Certain products touch off reactions. Harsh soaps, detergents, or skincare items irritate eczema-prone skin, causing red, swollen patches right where they contact. Wool clothing or chemicals do the same. Psoriasis can flare from skin care that dries or scratches the surface.

Inside the body, imbalances like low calcium levels from gland problems can hit psoriasis hard. This messes with skin cell growth and sparks extra inflammation, turning plaques persistent until levels fix.

Medications and diet shifts add risk. Some drugs trigger psoriasis outbreaks, while poor gut bacteria balance worsens eczema severity through whole-body inflammation.

Genetics set the stage, but these outside factors push symptoms over the edge. Spotting personal triggers helps keep flares in check.
