What Causes Breakouts From Overwashing
Many people think washing their face more often will clear up pimples faster. In reality, overwashing can trigger more breakouts. Your skin has a natural protective layer made of oils and good bacteria that keep it healthy. When you wash too much, usually more than twice a day, you strip away these oils.
This dryness tricks your skin into thinking it needs more protection. Your body responds by making extra oil, called sebum. That extra oil mixes with dead skin cells and clogs your pores. Clogged pores lead to pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads.
Overwashing also messes up your skin’s pH balance. The pH is like the skin’s acidity level, which helps fight off bad bacteria. When it’s off, your skin gets sensitive, red, and irritated. Irritated skin is more likely to break out.
Harsh scrubs or strong cleansers make it worse. They damage the skin barrier, which is the outer shield that holds in moisture. A damaged barrier lets in irritants and lets out needed moisture, causing inflammation. Inflammation swells pores and creates more acne spots.
Even if you have oily skin, overwashing does not help. Oily skin makes more sebum naturally, but washing too hard just ramps up oil production as a rebound effect. Signs you are overwashing include tight skin, extra shine later in the day, redness, or new pimples popping up.
Gentle cleansing once or twice a day with a mild product keeps things balanced. This lets your skin stay clean without the rebound oil and irritation that cause breakouts.
