What Causes Acne With Regular Cycles
Acne that shows up on a regular cycle, like every month before your period, is usually hormonal acne. It happens because hormones in your body shift in a predictable way, making your skin produce too much oil and clog up.
Hormones control how oily your skin gets. Androgens, which are hormones everyone has but men have more of, tell your oil glands to work harder. When these glands make extra oil, called sebum, it mixes with dead skin cells and blocks your pores. Bacteria then grow in those blocked spots, causing redness, swelling, and pimples.
In women, this often ties to the menstrual cycle. About a week or two before your period starts, progesterone levels go up. Progesterone boosts oil production, leading to breakouts on the jawline, chin, or cheeks. These spots are common because hormones affect the lower face more. Estrogen, another key hormone, usually keeps things balanced by calming down the oil glands. But when estrogen drops relative to androgens right before your period, acne flares.
This cycle repeats monthly for many women in their 20s, 30s, or even 40s. It is different from teenage acne, which might fade with basic cleansers. Hormonal acne sticks around and comes back on schedule.
Stress can make it worse. When you feel stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that ramps up oil and inflammation. Poor sleep or high-sugar foods might add to the problem by messing with insulin and hormones too.
Sometimes, regular cycle acne points to bigger issues like polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. Women with PCOS have higher androgen levels all the time, plus irregular periods or extra hair growth. Thyroid problems or starting and stopping birth control can also trigger cyclic breakouts.
Pregnancy and menopause bring their own hormone swings that cause similar patterns, though not always monthly. The key is that these flares follow your body’s natural rhythm.
