What Causes Acne That Cycles Monthly
Many women notice pimples popping up at the same time each month, usually right before their period. This monthly cycling acne comes from shifts in hormones that make the skin oilier and more prone to breakouts.
Hormones in a woman’s body go up and down during her menstrual cycle. About a week before the period starts, progesterone levels climb. This hormone tells the skin to make more oil, or sebum. Extra oil mixes with dead skin cells and clogs pores, trapping bacteria inside. That leads to red, swollen pimples, often deep and painful ones called cysts.[1][2][3]
Androgens play a big role too. These are hormones everyone has, but they act like male hormones. When androgen levels rise during the cycle, they crank up oil production even more. The result is clogged pores and inflammation, especially along the jawline, chin, and lower cheeks. These spots are classic signs of this type of acne.[1][4][7][8]
Stress makes it worse. When stressed, the body pumps out cortisol, another hormone that boosts oil and sparks inflammation. High-sugar foods or dairy can add to the problem by messing with skin cell turnover and pore clogging.[2][4][5]
Some women have conditions like PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome. This causes higher androgen levels all month, leading to ongoing cycling breakouts plus irregular periods or extra facial hair.[1][4][5]
These hormone swings do not stop after the teenage years. They can keep causing trouble into the 20s, 30s, and even menopause. Pregnancy or stopping birth control can trigger similar patterns.[4][6][7]
