What Causes Acne From Compromised Skin Barrier
Your skin barrier acts like a protective shield. It keeps out bad bacteria, holds in moisture, and maintains the right pH balance. When this barrier gets damaged, it opens the door to acne in several ways.
First, a weak barrier leads to more water loss from the skin. This is called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. Dry skin then signals oil glands to produce extra sebum to compensate. Too much sebum clogs pores, trapping dead skin cells and bacteria inside. This forms comedones, the early stage of pimples.
Second, the barrier normally supports good bacteria and blocks harmful ones like C. acnes. Damage disrupts the skin’s acidic pH, letting C. acnes grow out of control. These bacteria release enzymes that break down skin proteins and lipids, worsening the barrier and sparking inflammation. Inflammation then fuels more breakouts.
Harsh acne treatments often damage the barrier too. Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids kill bacteria and unclog pores but strip away natural oils and proteins. Over-cleansing with soaps containing sodium lauryl sulfate has the same effect. Over-exfoliation speeds up this process, making skin red, tight, and prone to more spots.
External factors play a role. Cold, dry winter air pulls moisture away, weakening the barrier and inviting bacteria. Stress hormones activate skin receptors, boosting oil production and abnormal skin shedding, which clogs follicles further. Even touching your face transfers pore-clogging oils from lotions.
Inflammatory acne itself harms the barrier. Swelling releases chemicals that break down the proteins and fats between skin cells. This creates a cycle: damage leads to acne, acne causes more damage.
Fungal acne can happen too when the barrier weakens. Yeast overgrows in moist, occluded conditions, mimicking regular pimples.
Skin conditions like eczema add risk by genetically impairing barrier proteins such as filaggrin.
