Originally developed for eye conditions, this drug is now being explored for its potential to reduce acne scarring. What Is Verteporfin?

Verteporfin is a medication primarily used to treat certain eye conditions like macular degeneration by targeting abnormal blood vessels in the eye. Recently, it has gained attention in the skincare world for its potential role in treating acne scars. Although this use is still in the research phase, early results suggest that verteporfin may help reduce scarring by influencing specific biological pathways involved in skin healing.

How Does Verteporfin Work for Acne Scars?

The mechanism behind verteporfin’s action on acne scars lies in its ability to inhibit certain signaling pathways, particularly the YAP/TAZ pathway. These pathways are involved in cell growth and tissue regeneration, and they play a critical role in the formation of fibrotic tissue, which is essentially scar tissue. By blocking these signals, verteporfin helps prevent or reduce the buildup of excessive scar tissue.

This is particularly promising for acne scars because it means verteporfin could help reduce the severity of scars, especially those that are raised or thick. It also promotes more balanced healing in areas affected by deep acne lesions, which tend to leave behind long-lasting marks.

Verteporfin in Research for Acne Scars

Though verteporfin is still being studied for acne scar treatment, early research shows promising results. In a number of preclinical trials, verteporfin has demonstrated the ability to prevent scar formation and improve the appearance of existing scars. These studies suggest that verteporfin helps modulate the skin’s healing response, minimizing the risk of excessive collagen buildup that leads to raised scars (hypertrophic scars).

Researchers are particularly interested in verteporfin’s potential for treating scars that are typically resistant to other therapies. While more studies are needed to confirm its long-term effectiveness and safety for acne scars, the early findings are encouraging.

Can Verteporfin Treat All Types of Acne Scars?

Verteporfin shows the most promise for treating hypertrophic scars, which are raised scars that result from an overproduction of collagen. Its ability to regulate collagen production and inhibit scar tissue formation makes it an ideal candidate for this type of scarring. Additionally, there is potential for verteporfin to help with newer scars, particularly those that are in the early stages of healing.

However, its effectiveness for atrophic scars, which are indented scars caused by a loss of tissue (like ice-pick or boxcar scars), is less clear. More research is needed to determine if verteporfin can improve these types of scars, or if it works better when combined with other treatments.

How Verteporfin Is Administered

Verteporfin is typically administered as part of a procedure called photodynamic therapy (PDT). In this procedure, verteporfin is applied topically or injected into the affected skin. After application, the area is exposed to a specific light source, which activates the drug. This activation process is what enables verteporfin to target and treat the damaged or scarred tissue.

Photodynamic therapy with verteporfin is a relatively straightforward procedure, but it should always be performed by a trained dermatologist. The number of sessions needed will depend on the severity of the scars and how your skin responds to the treatment.

Potential Side Effects of Verteporfin

Like most treatments, verteporfin can have side effects, though they are generally mild. Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, or sensitivity in the treated area, especially after photodynamic therapy. In some cases, patients might experience increased skin sensitivity to light, making it necessary to avoid direct sun exposure for a period after treatment.

To manage these side effects, dermatologists may recommend moisturizing the treated area and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin from UV damage. If more serious side effects occur, it’s important to consult with your dermatologist right away to adjust the treatment plan.
