The Rise of Acne in Women Over 30

Acne used to be thought of as a teenage problem, but more women over 30 are dealing with it now. This adult acne often shows up as painful, deep pimples along the jawline, chin, and neck, unlike the widespread breakouts teens get on the forehead and nose.[1][3]

Hormones are the main driver for many of these women. Androgens, which are male hormones everyone has, can rise and make skin glands produce too much oil. This oil clogs pores and leads to inflammation. In women over 30, these shifts happen around menstrual cycles, when progesterone spikes right before periods, or during pregnancy and perimenopause.[1][2][3]

Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, make it worse for some. PCOS raises androgen levels and comes with signs like irregular periods, weight gain, and extra facial hair. Thyroid problems or other hormone imbalances can also play a part.[1][2]

Stress adds fuel to the fire. It boosts cortisol, a hormone that ramps up oil production and triggers breakouts. Busy lives with poor sleep, skipped workouts, or irregular meals make skin more prone to issues.[1][2]

Everyday choices matter too. Diets high in sugar, refined carbs, dairy, or processed foods can spike insulin and stir up inflammation in sensitive people. Skincare missteps, like using heavy, pore-clogging moisturizers, harsh cleansers, or thick makeup, trap oil and bacteria. Inconsistent routines let buildup happen.[1][2][4]

Certain medications, such as steroids, lithium, or some birth control with progesterone, can throw hormones off and cause flares.[2][3]

This rise in adult acne for women over 30 means more are seeking ways to manage it. Spotting the U-shaped pattern on the lower face is a clue it’s hormonal, not just poor hygiene.[3]
