Lactic Acid for Sensitive Skin
If you have sensitive skin, finding the right skincare ingredient can be tricky. Many exfoliants are too harsh and cause redness or irritation. Lactic acid stands out as a gentle option that exfoliates while keeping your skin hydrated.
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, found naturally in milk. It works by dissolving dead skin cells on the surface without digging too deep. Its larger molecule size means it moves slowly into the skin, staying mostly on top. This reduces the chance of stinging, burning, or breaking the skin barrier, which is common with stronger acids like glycolic acid.
One big plus for sensitive skin is lactic acid’s moisturizing power. It acts as a humectant, pulling water into the skin and boosting natural moisturizers. This makes it perfect for dry, easily irritated, or dehydrated skin. People with eczema or rosacea often tolerate it well at low strengths, as long as the skin is not cracked or inflamed.
Start with products at 5 percent concentration or less, like serums or lotions with added soothing ingredients such as aloe vera or chamomile. Apply it 2 or 3 times a week at night after cleansing. Follow with a moisturizer to lock in hydration. Over time, you will notice smoother texture, brighter tone, and fewer fine lines. It smooths uneven areas and fades dullness without the downtime of harsher treatments.
Lactic acid serves as a milder swap for retinoids, which can be too strong for sensitive types. It renews cells steadily, improving plumpness and glow. In winter or dry climates, its hydrating effect shines even more. Dermatologists note that higher strengths like 12 percent offer more exfoliation but still feel gentle with regular use.
Pair it carefully with other actives. Skip using it on the same day as strong retinoids or vitamin C to avoid overload. Always patch test new products on your inner arm first. If tingling happens, cut back or dilute with moisturizer.
