How Barrier Damage Affects Acne Scars

Your skin has a protective outer layer called the barrier. This thin shield made of skin cells, lipids, and proteins keeps moisture inside and blocks irritants outside. It also controls your skin’s pH and supports good bacteria. When this barrier works well, your skin stays healthy and hydrated.

Acne often harms this barrier. Inflammatory pimples like papules, pustules, or cysts release chemicals that break down the proteins and lipids holding skin cells together. Dryness and ageing naturally thin skin over time, making old scars look deeper. Without a strong barrier, new acne can break out and create fresh scars, undoing progress.

Repairing the barrier helps prevent and improve scars. Focus on gentle hydration, lipids, and proteins to rebuild it. A healthy barrier supports better collagen production during healing, reduces new breakouts, and makes scars less noticeable.
