Do Growth Factors Actually Work for Skin?
Growth factors are proteins that tell skin cells to grow, repair, and renew. They occur naturally in your body, but skincare products add them to fight aging signs like wrinkles and dullness. The question is whether they deliver real results.
These proteins come from sources like human stem cells, platelets in your blood, or even animal colostrum. For example, platelet-rich plasma or PRF uses your own blood to concentrate growth factors such as PDGF and TGF. When applied to the skin, they aim to boost collagen production, thicken the skin barrier, and improve texture.[1][7] Epidermal growth factor, or EGF, from colostrum speeds up skin repair by helping new cells form over damaged areas.[6]
Clinical studies show promise. In one trial, a product with growth factors from stem cells reduced wrinkles, spots, and pores when used topically on photoaged skin. Injected versions improved hydration, density, and blood flow.[1] Another study found that serum enriched with growth factors and anti-inflammatory compounds increased skin firmness and moisture after 12 to 24 weeks.[1] PRF treatments gave some people quick volume and ongoing improvements as growth factors worked over time.[7]
Growth factors seem to shine in regenerative effects, especially for mature or damaged skin. They signal cells to remodel collagen and elastin, leading to better elasticity and tone, often within six to 12 weeks.[1][4] Products with them, like professional serums, outperform basic peptides in repair after procedures or heavy aging.[4]
Not all results are dramatic. They work best alongside treatments like microneedling, where growth factor media brightened skin more than needling alone.[1] Safety looks good in trials, with few mild side effects, but effects vary by person and product quality.[1]
