What Causes Enlarged Pores After Acne

Acne often leaves behind enlarged pores because the inflammation and clogging from breakouts stretch the pore walls, and once the acne heals, the pores struggle to snap back to their original size. This happens when pores get blocked by excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads that make the openings look bigger even after the spots clear up.

During an acne breakout, your skin’s sebaceous glands produce more oil, known as sebum. This oil mixes with dead skin cells and debris, forming a plug inside the pore. If the pore stays open, it turns into a blackhead from oxygen exposure. If skin covers it, you get a whitehead. The pressure from this buildup stretches the pore, and the surrounding inflammation makes it swell even more. Bacteria like C. acnes can get trapped too, sparking redness and further enlargement.

After the acne fades, the pore does not always shrink back fully. The repeated stretching weakens the skin around it. Over time, loss of collagen and elastin, which keep skin firm and bouncy, prevents the pore from tightening up. This is worse if you had severe acne with cysts or nodules, as they cause deeper damage.

Oily skin types see this more often since they make extra sebum, keeping pores stretched. Genetics play a part too, giving some people naturally larger pores that acne makes worse. Hormonal shifts from stress, puberty, or other changes boost oil production, fueling the cycle. Sun damage and poor skincare, like not cleansing properly or using comedogenic products, add to the problem by breaking down skin elasticity and clogging pores further.

Even after acne clears, habits matter. Skipping gentle cleansing or over-washing can irritate skin and keep pores clogged. Using oil-free, non-comedogenic products helps prevent new blockages.
