What Causes Skin Oil Production to Increase

Your skin makes oil through tiny glands called sebaceous glands. These glands produce sebum, a natural oil that keeps skin soft and protected. When these glands work too hard, they create extra oil, leading to shiny or greasy skin. Several common factors can cause this overproduction.

Genetics play a big role. If your parents have oily skin, you are more likely to have it too. Genes control the size and activity of your sebaceous glands, making some people naturally produce more sebum.

Hormones are another key trigger. Androgens like testosterone tell the glands to make more oil. This explains why oiliness spikes during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause. Stress raises cortisol, a hormone that also boosts oil production.

Diet affects it as well. Foods high in sugar, like high-glycemic items, can increase insulin and related signals that ramp up sebum. Dairy, greasy foods, and high-calorie meals may contribute by providing fuel for oil-making or raising hormone levels.

Environment matters too. Hot, humid weather makes glands more active, as warmth speeds up their metabolism and lowers oil thickness for easier flow. Pollution like fine particles causes stress in skin cells, leading to more oil. Even dry, cold air can trick skin into overproducing oil to compensate.

Skincare habits can backfire. Washing too often, using harsh cleaners, or skipping moisturizer strips natural oils. Your skin then signals glands to make even more sebum to replace what is lost. Heavy products or alcohol-based toners worsen the cycle.

Medications and other changes, like chemical exposure or certain health conditions, can also tip the balance toward more oil.
