Why Dairy Is Linked to Breakouts in Some People

Many people notice more pimples after eating dairy like milk or cheese. This happens because dairy can affect hormones and oil in the skin, leading to clogged pores and inflammation. Not everyone gets breakouts from dairy, but for those who do, it often shows up around the jawline or chin.

One main reason is a hormone called IGF-1 found in milk. IGF-1 tells oil glands in the skin to make more sebum, that oily stuff that can trap dirt and bacteria in pores. When pores clog, pimples form. Skim milk seems to cause this more than full-fat versions, possibly because of how it’s processed.[3][2]

Dairy also spikes insulin levels in the body. High insulin acts like a signal to grow more skin cells quickly, which can block pores too. Whey protein from milk, often in shakes, does this even more because of its amino acids.[2][4]

Inflammation plays a role as well. Dairy might stir up swelling in the skin for sensitive folks, making redness and bumps worse. This ties into the gut too, where dairy could upset good bacteria and lead to skin issues.[1]

Studies show this link is real but not for all. Only about 20 percent of people prone to acne react strongly to dairy. High sugar foods often team up with dairy to make things worse, like in chocolate milk or ice cream.[2]

If you suspect dairy, try cutting it out for a few weeks and track your skin. Swap in alternatives like almond milk, but keep calcium from other foods. A doctor or dermatologist can help check if it’s really the cause.
